Whistler Mountain Celebrates Opening Day With A One-Metre Base And 122cms Of Fresh Snow To Carve
Winter is ON at Whistler Blackcomb as die-hards flock to the slopes for early opening. Opening day in a ski resort generates more excitement than any other day of the year, and in Whistler Village this morning that was no exception. Keeners started lining up yesterday afternoon to get the first gondola up, and by 7:30am this morning, the lineup stretched throughout the Village. With 122 centimetres (48 inches) of snow falling in just over week, and an opening day that was bumped up by 12 days, the excitement was warranted.

Intrawest To Recommend That All Resort Guests Wear Helmets
Vancouver, BC, Oct 1, 2009 – New helmet use guidelines receive industry support from the National Ski Areas Association and Canada West Ski Areas Association. Intrawest today announced that, beginning with the 2009-2010 winter season, the Company will increase awareness of the importance of helmet use at all of its wholly-owned ski resorts in North America. Intrawest will recommend that all skiers and snowboarders visiting its resorts wear helmets and there will be mandatory helmet requirements for all children and youth participants in Ski and Snowboard School Programs as well as all students participating in freestyle terrain park programs, regardless of their age. The new helmet use guidelines underscore Intrawest’s commitment to guest safety and have the support of the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) and Canada West Ski Areas Association (CWSAA).

Whistler, BC, August 4, 2009 – The Ministry of Forests and Range and the Whistler Fire Department are pleased to confirm that the Ruby Bowl fire showed minimal spread over night and is estimated at 5 hectares in size.
The initial attack on the fire by Ministry of Forests and Range appears to have been successful; however, zero percent of the fire is currently contained. A 20 person crew has water on-site and is working to establish a guard on the west flank of the fire. Throughout the day there may be air support supplied to the ground crew should it be required. The Ruby Bowl terrain is very rocky, with minimal alpine vegetation and is isolated from the more commonly accessed portions of Blackcomb Mountain.
